Abstract

C. Bustarret : From the Nile to the Yemen : Bartholdi as Photographer. Auguste Bartholdi's first journey to the Orient, undertaken to Egypt and Nubia with the painter Gérôme in 1855-1856, was officially a photographic mission with a precise documentary aim — the study of antiquities and the recording of monuments. Though attention has been paid to the journey’s significance for Bartholdi’s sculpture, insufficient regard has been given to the originality of his photographs, which concentrate on Egyptian daily life and reveal an interest in the unexpected and the play of light and objects. These photographs can thus be seen as an intimate record of the journey serving a revitalization of visual experience.
