Abstract

The use of laboratory tests is more and more carried out in equine medicine. As a matter of fact, clinical pathology is an essential assistance to the diagnosis, the following of therapy and to the prognosis of equine diseases. Nevertheless, this aid is effective only if the results of the chosen parameters can be compared with reference values and interpreted in order to explore a function. The results from the blood examinations performed among 757 saddle horses have been collected. The animals belong to three relatively similar groups regarding the way they are taken care of, the stables they live in, their geographical locations and sanitary conditions. The statistical processing of these data allowed us to set up usual values for 28 blood parameters. Those values can fluctuate in a very significant way, depending on the age, sex or breed of the animal. Being aware of such differences, the physiological variations can be more easily differentiated from those due to diseases.
