Abstract

This paper focuses on the process of innovation management at DSM, a Dutch multi-specialty company active worldwide in life science and nutritional products, performance materials and industrial chemicals. Drawing on the company's impressive history of self-transformation through innovation and the author's own extensive experience in managing R&D and innovation processes at DSM, the paper addresses such matters as the organisation of R&D and innovation, the development and management of technological competences in a global set-up, the alignment of technology strategy and business strategy, and the role of public-private partnerships in achieving innovation. The paper concludes with a short consideration of new horizons for innovation in the life sciences and material sciences.
