Abstract

To evaluate the effectiveness of HF/alumina contact in a dry scrubber, the conventional scrubbing efficiency is inadequate because of its dependency on many parameters, including alumina feed rate. A semi-empirical expression called the “scrubbing index” is shown to be an appropriate measure. The scrubbing index expresses the extent of scrubbing achieved per unit of alumina feed rate. For a given alumina type and scrubber contacting design, the index appears to be constant and independent of alumina feed rate and hydrogen fluoride concentration in the raw cell gas. It can thus be used to characterize a given scrubbing system and predict its performance with a given alumina type. The derivation of the index and its application to a vertical-stud Soderberg dry scrubbing system is described.
