Abstract

In recent years several new drugs have been added to the ocular pharmacopeia, particularly for the treatment of viral and other infections of the eye and in the management of uveitis and glaucoma. The nurse caring for the patient with an ophthalmologic disorder is most frequently the person responsible for administering the medications and may consequently be the first person to note any side effects. She will therefore want to be familiar with the various therapeutic agents used in this field: the route, dosage, use, and side effects. Drugs used in the treatment of eye disorders can be categorized into the following groups: mydriatics and cycloplegics, antiglaucoma agents, antiviral and antibiotic agents, steroids, topical anesthetics, and general therapeutics. Specific details about dosage are given in the accompanying tables.
