Abstract

A two-step sequential gelation process is developed by C.-H. Chen and co-workers to produce agarose/alginate double network multi-compartmental hydrogel particles, using droplet assemblies induced by superhydrophobic surfaces as templates. The hydrogel particles can be formed with diverse hierarchical structures, showing combinational functionalities. On page 4886 it is shown how the synthesized hydrogel particles, when loaded with polypyrrole (PPy) nanoparticles that act as photothermal nanotransducers, function as NIR light-triggered and deformation-free hydrogel materials.
