Abstract

Drug abuse training and education both past and present has been many things in the United States. A misnomer, an anachronism, a form of political expediency, a format for hustling, a focus of religiosity, etc. It has rarely ever been defined in terms of content, goals, or who is to be responsible for its development, maintenance, and evaluation. And because of the confusion, it has tended to grow arithmetically as the use of drugs for recreation has seemingly grown geometrically. Within this context the physician, his professional organizations, and the medical school are now being asked, and pushed, to intervene effectively.
