Abstract

In a Ministry supported Drug De-Addiction Center in Kolkata, India a group of heroin and brown sugar users was studied for their ordinal position in the family. Also in view of the importance of the cultural influence on the mode of upbringing and personality formation of sibs of different ordinal position, the study aimed to observe whether the difference in ordinal position has any significant influence on drug-taking behavior. The study findings indicated a significant association between prevalence prognosis of drug-use habit and birth-order. Namely, the youngest male child was more prone to drug-use and carried poor prognosis and the reverse was true for the eldest. Personality make-up of the different role models according to sub-ranks have been discussed. The unique findings of the sample were judged in the context of Indian cultural milieu.
