Abstract

AbstractIn order to simulate the hydrodynamics in a liquid‐liquid extraction column, a drop population model has been developed (Casamatta, 1981), taking into account the fundamental mechanisms: drop breakage, transport, and coalescence. Results of a set of experiments devoted to the description of drop breakage and transport in a Kuhni column stage are presented. A comparison between simulation results and experimental mean hold‐up and Sauter mean diameter data collected in a Kuhni column is finally undertaken, which leads to a study of the sensitivity of the model according to the transport and breakage parameters.
