Abstract

Electricity firm Commonwealth Edison, based in Illinois, has announced plans to start sending drones to inspect power lines. The utility is the first in the US to receive permission from the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) to use drones for inspecting equipment. Since September, the FAA has selectively granted permission to a handful of companies interested in flying drones, like television and construction firms.
