Abstract

A drone or an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is utilized in a wide range of applications with different purposes, such as military, agriculture, surveillance, and photography. Nowadays, we have next-generation smart UAVs with great potential because of digital advances, including remote sensing, wireless connectivity, search and rescue, delivery of commodities, surveillance and security, and crop monitoring. Particularly in civil infrastructure, in terms of reduced risks and lower costs, UAVs have many applications, namely real-time monitoring, disaster control, traffic detection, logistics, and inspection. UAV, which is also called a drone, is capable of capturing an aerial view or a bird's eye view. In this chapter, we focused on the recent trends in drone research technology and identified issues and challenges. The chapter also provides future insights on other potential UAV uses and application challenges, with the help of existing literature reviews and research efforts that could unlock the problems and constraints described. Furthermore, we discussed a relevant comprehensive study and the specifications of different drone models and UAV simulators. We also defined the UAV applications, including their classification, requirements, and equipment. Finally, future insights on UAV applications in artificial intelligence are also given.
