Abstract

This paper argues that certain purported differences between Differential Reinforcement of Other Behavior (DRO) and Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible Behavior (DRI) as applied behavior change techniques lack a firm theoretical foundation. Instances where the use of the DRO technique in particular has been reported are examined from a theoretical standpoint and two alternate conceptual reformulations of simple DRO are advanced. Suggestions as to future research to resolve some of the theoretical questions raised in this paper are also made.
