Abstract

A driver’s sight distance is not only one of the important indexes used in analysis and evaluation of road design and operating quality, but also an important factor in ensuring road safety. The existing model of sight distance has some disadvantages, such as low levels of accuracy and sight distance changes are not continuous. Accordingly, this paper proposes a new method of sight distance calculation based on three-dimensional (3D) image technology. This study also analyzes the sight distance changes of horizontal curves through the comparative analysis of different algorithms used to determine sight distance. The results show that the sight distance calculation method based on 3D image technology is accurate, effective and can obtain the sight distance curve, which changes continuously along the course. This method is applicable in sight distance analysis for existing roads as well as roadways not yet established.
