Abstract

This symposium aims to identify and explore key drivers of reconfiguration of firm capabilities. Following emergent consensus in the dynamic capabilities literature, we define capability reconfiguration broadly as the process by which a firm significantly changes how it does what it does, transforming existing capabilities in the face of change. While a few key theoretical and empirical studies have recognized this as an important and fertile area for research, we still know relatively little about the triggers that initiate reconfiguration and the processes through which this occurs. Our symposium seeks to begin to address knowledge gaps, uniquely focusing on internal drivers of capability reconfiguration. In addition to an opening “keynote” speaker to kick off the session, this session will feature the presentation of three papers and a discussant that will unify the themes presented across the papers and suggest related avenues for future capability reconfiguration related research.
