Abstract

Jean Yanne's films have a real originality which heralded a change from the vague contemporain which had previously defined French comedies. This originality is due partly to a critical ideological context which has led to a significant overhaul of the themes of mainstream commercial cinema. Nevertheless care must be taken in defining the subversive potential of this kind of cinema as it is subject to the constraints of commercial cinema and has a duty to incorporate the assumed expectations of the general public thus consolidating a certain portrayal of politics for the masses.
