Abstract

Frequent citations in the literature indicate that all adult bot flies are aphagous and without functional mouthparts. This paper describes imbibing of free water by two species of adult Cephenemyia . While in the process of drinking, the functioning of the external mouthparts was viewed through a stereoscopic microscope. Intake of fluids was confirmed by vivisection of flies offered a 0.01% solution of aqueous neutral red dye. Amount of fluid imbibed was measured by weighing flies immediately before and after drinking. The longevity of flies drinking water was significantly longer than that of the controls. Possible intake of free fluids by these flies under natural conditions is discussed, and a description of the anatomy of the mouthparts is presented.
