Abstract

Volunteers play a vital role in the current 'mixed economy of care', but have not attracted a proportionate level of interest from researchers. In this English study, 14 volunteer schemes formed the purposive sample. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with the organisers of each scheme, but it proved difficult to interview volunteers themselves, as organisers were reluctant to release names and addresses.
