Abstract
Whitefish River First Nation (WRFN) is an Anishinaabek (Ojibway) community that is surrounded by Georgian Bay and Lake Huron. After being excluded from a provincial planning process, WRFN developed its own source water protection plan based on traditional knowledge about the waters surrounding the community. Water is believed to have a spirit and to be a source of life. Because the waters have been contaminated, community members believe it is important to have ceremonies to heal the waters. Guidelines on working with traditional knowledge have been prepared by the Chiefs of Ontario. The cultural and spiritual aspects of water could have informed the provincial planning process and strengthened their source water protection plan.
