Abstract

Cathy Schlund-Vials's essay examines the groundbreaking Asian American graphic narrative collection, Secret Identities (2009). Schlund-Vials argues that the comic's form provides Asian American artists and writers to speculate on non-normative and exceptional identities by putting a twist on the all-American superhero folklore. According to Schlund-Vials's analysis, graphic narratives offer a culture venue to explore alternative histories and identities that reimagine the past, present, and future for Asian Americans.
