Abstract

A multimodal group counseling approach to enhance adolescent interpersonal skills was designed through combining Interpersonal Cognitive Problem-Solving (ICPS) dialoguing and a variation of drama therapy. Fifteen black foster care youth participated in a “Summer Stock Theatre’ experience, in which they wrote a script, designed scenery and costumes, and produced a play. Through the problem-solving/drama interactions, and culminating in the final performance before an audience, youth were exposed to new cognitive schemas for thinking. The Means-Ends Problem-Solving Procedure was administered pre- and post-group intervention, showing a significant difference in interpersonal cognitive problem-solving.
