Abstract

The time dependent thinning of liquid films on a mica substrate has been examined. Aqueous solutions of glycerol, with and without potassium chloride present, were used to form the liquid film. The results were examined in the light of the Reynolds’ equation for hydrodynamic thinning. Several features of the results were as predicted by the equation but the viscosity of the liquid in the film was found to be larger than the bulk value.
