Abstract

Drag lives here is a photo essay that documents the performances of two of Cape Town’s most well-established drag performers, Manila von Teez and Vida Fantabisher. Cape Town could be considered the unofficial home of drag performance in South Africa, with its ties to the Cape Minstrel Carnival, as well as a long history of drag pageants that took place in various communities designated as spaces for coloured people during apartheid-era South Africa. Most photos were taken in Zer021, the only queer Cape Town nightclub frequented regularly by clientele of colour. Both performers and audiences at Zer021 saw the nightclub as the true home of drag, as it promoted weekly drag performances. Zer021 occupied a small and intimate space, which meant that audience members were drawn deeply into the drag artists’ performances.
