Abstract

The average drag on a body due to a vortex wake in two-dimensional flow was first calculated by Kármán, using pairs of point vortices to approximate the wake. An inviscid wake model with finite-area vortices was used by Saffman and Schatzman to find an analogous drag formula, one component of which is an integral along a path transverse to the wake. In this paper, the integral is found explicitly, in two forms, and corresponding formulae for the average drag are derived.
