Abstract

Pediatricians are well aware of the special susceptibility of the fetus and child to chemical pollutants.1 Methemoglobinemia may occur in infants exposed to nitrates from well water2; congenital Minamata disease (cerebral palsy) has occurred from intrauterine exposure to methylmercury in fish from contaminated seawater.3 There is no doubt about the need for safe water. In its statement, the Committee on Environmental Hazards considered the evidence then available on the carcinogenicity in man of chemical contaminants of water.
