Abstract

Dr. Kenneth J. Plotkin was the chief scientist at Wyle and was known in the acoustics community as an expert in many aspects of aircraft and transportation noise. He was also widely regarded as an authority on the subject of sonic booms. His enthusiasm for research and new discoveries was contagious—it was almost impossible not to be influenced by his example. He was very willing to share his expertise with those who also ventured into the realm of sonic boom propagation. It is an honor to be one of the people who benefited from his willingness to share his wisdom and learn from his teaching. An initial discussion with Dr. Plotkin inquiring about his knowledge of the rise time of shocks in sonic booms developed into friendship and mentoring that lasted almost 14 years. This presentation will highlight these early conversations and share how they evolved over time. Additionally, the impact he made on my engineering career and graduate school education will also be presented.
