Abstract

Destiny, the final book of acclaimed French author Pierrette Fleutiaux, is a plight for the migrants cause and an invitation to the return of the value of hospitality. Step by step, the eponymous protagonist’s fragmented journey is unveiled, taking on monomythic qualities: her exile from Nigeria, her perilous crossing of the Mediterranean Sea, the traffickers’ lies, the forced prostitution, and her successful escape to France. All the battles she had to wage to survive elevate her to a mythical figure whose gaze holds power over men and whose name defy the odds. While brushing Destiny’s portrait, Pierrette Fleutiaux gives a voice and offers visibility to the migrants by bringing light to their aspirations. Destiny strives for an ordinary life in France. She wishes for a life of security where she could heal from her past traumas, build solid ties of solidarity with a community, and dream of a better life for herself and her children. Through her resilient protagonist, the author emphasizes the migrants’ strength in their fight to survive the violence and exploitation on their journey.
