Abstract
N ORTHERN mythological heroes like Woden and Wainamoinen, journeying in their craggy, fog-enshrouded wastelands, were wont to be plagued by querulous creatures, trolls, giants male and female, affronted deities, and assorted hobgoblins who, in the manner of their kind throughout the world, would accost travellers and bar the way. These Northern bogies had their peculiarities, however; they seem to have been an uncommonly intellectual lot, with interests in epistemology, lexicography, etymology, and onomastics.
