Abstract

The straw-based construction board business has hit a rough spot, but don't tell that to Dow Chemical. Dow has agreed to acquire most of Isobord, a Canadian company that makes a plywood replacement out of wheat straw and methylene diphenyl isocyanate (MDI) resin. Isobord entered the strawboard business in 1998 with a $100 million plant based on resin supplied by Dow. However, the company ran into trouble and declared bankruptcy in February of this year. Brad Money, the Dow executive who will lead the acquired business, says Isobord fits well with Dow's position in other home construction markets. We have always believed in the product, and we continue to believe that it has the potential for strong commercial appeal with consumers and contractors, he says.
