Abstract

In a departure from its traditional way of operating, Dow Chemical has established a new, service-oriented business—Contract Manufacturing Services (CMS)—that will carry out chemical manufacturing for outside customers and other Dow businesses. Long focused internally on developing production processes and technologies, and on commercializing the resulting products, the $20 billion-salesper-year chemical maker will now offer process development and analytical services; product manufacturing at Dow or customer-owned facilities; and design, construction, and operation of production units at either Dow or customer sites. Dow isn't specific about what chemistries CMS is developing with customers, but the business will capitalize on Dow's existing in-house process expertise.
