Abstract

A primary objective of the USDA Expanded Douglas-fir Tussock Moth Research and Development Program is to develop and evaluate short- and long-term forest pest management systems that will effectively prevent or suppress tussock moth infestations. We are aware that long-term management of forest defoliators, such as Douglas-fir tussock moth, is through prevention of outbreaks by stand manipulation and management. In the foreseeable future, however, a significant proportion of the forest type susceptible to this insect will remain as wild, unmanaged stands, subject to periodic outbreaks. Consequently, considerable effort in the program has been dedicated toward development of chemical and microbial insecticides to provide the resource manager with direct alternatives.
