Abstract

A liquid crystal (LC) lens of two LC layers is proposed to increase the lens focusing power. The lens structure is developed from the lens of one LC layer with an insulating glass substrate between the electrode and the LC layer reported before. The LC lens preserves the high optical quality and its focal length is electrically tunable. The focusing power of the lens becomes much larger than two times that of the LC lens with one LC layer. The properties of the LC lens are measured and the mechanisms of the power enhancement are discussed.
