Abstract

This paper investigates the properties of a double-stage parallel plate avalanche counter (PPAC), operated at low gas pressures (5-20 Torr). Substantial improvement in the detector response to light particles, rate capability (~1 MHz/mm2) and energy resolution were observed in comparison with those of conventional PPACs. The detector is a very attractive option for charged particles detection in intense accelerators.
