Abstract
The waveguide-specific optical properties of Er3+ in Ti:LiNbO3 have been investigated. Using double-resonance excitation-emission spectroscopy a drastic fluorescence line narrowing is observed which allows resolution of the strongly inhomogeneously broadened emission lines. This way, the Er3+ ions in this strongly perturbed environment could be studied selectively. In particular, it is found that the main influence of the Ti4+ diffusion profile within the wave-guiding zone is of electrostatic nature and is due to a decrease of the internal local field with increasing [Ti4+]-concentration.
