Abstract

Ratios of double-to-single photoionisation cross sections for Tl and Pb have been determined in the energy range 22-35 eV, where 5d ionisation occurs. In the case of Pb, double ionisation by Auger decay is the predominant relaxation process whereas in Tl double ionisation is restricted to the much lower probability 'direct' process. Comparisons are made with earlier data obtained using photoabsorption and photoelectron spectroscopy.
