Abstract

A time-of-flight mass spectrometer has been crossed with atomic beams of Sm, Eu and Tm and a source of monochromatic synchrotron radiation in order to obtain the ratio of double to single photoionisation cross sections in the region of the 5p ionisation thresholds. In all cases there appears to be little or no correlation between the variation in this ratio and the considerable structure in the previously published photoabsorption spectra.
