Abstract

Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) was introduced into therapy by Andreas Gruntzig in 1977 [1,2]. More than 2,100 procedures have been performed in Frankfurt. Rapid technical improvement and the addition of steerable systems in 1982 [3] led to a steady increase of the acute success rate to 87%.
