Abstract

The vertical double ionisation energy of methane is determined to be 35.6+or-0.25 eV by means of an experimental technique in which the kinetic energy spectrum is measured of product negative ions resulting from double electron capture collisions of OH+, O+ and Cl+ ions with neutral CH4 at 6 keV impact energy.
