Abstract
Combined temperature and species gradients induced buoyancy-driven natural convection flow of cold water at temperatures in the neighbourhood of the temperature of maximum density is investigated. Further, it is assumed that the addition of solutes to pure water raises the temperature of maximum density. Numerical solutions of the governing equations are sought using alternating direction implicit (ADI) and successive over relaxation (SOR) methods. The results of the investigation are presented in the form of streamlines, isotherms and isoconcentration lines. The average heat and mass transfer rates calculated, are found to depend nonlinearly on temperature gradient in the cavity.
