Abstract

Background: Small bowel (SB) bleeding is a clinical challenge due to limited capabilities to identify and treat potential bleeding sources. Double balloon endoscopy (DBE) is a new technique that improves evaluation of these patients. Aim: To describe our experience using DBE for presumed SB bleeding. Methods: Consecutive patients with presumed SB bleeding referred between 9/2004-6/2006 were selected from the Fox Chase DBE database. All patients had undergone conventional endoscopies elsewhere. Abnormalities on DBE were described as “definite” if a clear explanation for a patient's bleeding was identified, ‘possible’ for a lesion which might be the source, and the sum (‘definite + possible’) were labeled ‘potential’ sources.
