Abstract

Eastern Anatolia Region, from past to present, is a region in which rate of urbanization and urban development have been under the average rate of Turkey, and urbanization has been at a low pace. This case, which can be considered in terms of many parameters, is closely related to geographical structures and features of the region. In this study, the historical change and development of urban population were scrutinized and it was aimed to analyze the distribution of the cities in the region. The structure and change of the population in the region across the different times in the republican period were evaluated and the change in the rates of urban population and urbanization and the numbers of cities were analyzed. The cities of the region were graded according to their populations, mapped, and population movements and the effects geographical factors together with others on urbanization were examined.
