Abstract

From the perspective of social history in a comparative methodology exercise, this article discusses career centres spas located on both sides of the Atlantic, San Sebastian in Europe and Mar del Plata in America. Two late models in the British case, but came to become the most important distinction bathing destinations in their respective countries, between late 19th century and the first decades of the 20th. Such analyses issues associated with their different origins, the tourist function, the impact of the hygiene, paradigm as also the links established between both spas by Basque immigrants settled in the southern city. It also explores in different destinations. San Sebastian, associated the beaches of Northern France, and Mar del Plata distinction to the Argentine social tourism stage.
