Abstract

The South African coat-of-arms is inscribed with words drawn from the notebooks and papers of the Bleek–Lloyd collection – !ke e: /xarra //ke (diverse people unite). They appear alongside figures adapted from the Linton rock art panel, placing bushman (San) culture at the heart of modern South African identity. The immense cultural archive that forms the Bleek– Lloyd collection is recognised by UNESCO as documentary heritage of world significance. In this thoughtful and rewarding book, historian Jill Weintroub addresses a silence at the heart of this collection: the complex and enigmatic character of the scholar and compiler, Dorothea Bleek.
