Abstract

Doppler sonography has become a principal diagnostic tool in antenatal care, and as a consequence the perinatal outcome of high risk pregnancies has significantly improved. As an ultrasound scan is able to show the severity of any fetal malformations in a high risk pregnancy, health care professionals are able to be alerted relatively quickly that a condition may need treatment and/or alter the management of a pregnancy. The timing of scans can also be of great consequence. Ultrasounds are able to pick up defects in very early periods of gestation and when acted upon can ensure that the mother is in a position to have a number of options open to her.
