Abstract

In recent years, Doppler ultrasound has been used extensively to evaluate blood flow patterns within the heart and peripheral vessels. This technology can be used qualitatively to diagnose valvular and congenital heart disease; and, because it is a safe and non-invasive technique, Doppler ultrasound can be used for the serial assessment of the defect. In addition, recent studies have shown that the severity of the flow abnormality can be accurately quantitated from the Doppler examination in many cases. The purposes of this chapter are: (1) to examine the basic physical principles of Doppler ultrasound, and (2) to review the clinical applications of this technique.
