Abstract

Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG) crystals doped with divalent or tetravalent ions are shown to be promising as basic material for thermistor-bolometers. This is the first proposed device application of the electrical properties of magnetic garnets. To illustrate the material performances, the static current-voltage characteristic and the voltage response versus current and frequency under a.c. laser irradiation are reported and discussed. The most attractive properties of doped YIG for thermistor-bolometer applications result to be the high responsivity, the speed of the response, and the high intrinsic absorbance in the ultraviolet, in the visible and in the near infrared.
