Abstract
We, therefore, added routine annual chest CT to our follow up protocol of cardiac transplant patients with greater than 10 packyears smoking history. Lung cancer developed in 20 patients over 17 years (see figure). Under the new chest CT protocol, we identified 3 patients with lung cancer at an early enough stage to undergo surgical resection. The 1 and 5 year survival of the patients treated with surgery vs. chemotherapy/radiation was 77% and 23% vs. 27% and 0% respectively (p .0027). Therefore, survival is improved in patients able to undergo surgical resection. This new routine chest CT protocol will help clinicians diagnose lung cancer earlier and, therefore, may improve survival of patients.
