Abstract

ABSTRACT The recent study of handaxes assemblages of middle Pleistocene from the Somme Valley, Escaut basin (France and Belgium) and from West of France presents very différents results. Next to the handaxes (too often considered as the only chronological markers) is successively highlighted the importance of heavy tools (choppers, chopping-tools, cleavers) and flake tools, classical and composite tools and the way Levallois and non- Levallois cores are exploited.
