Abstract

The article is dedicated to the history of folk titles, which made the roofing (Sempervivum tectorum L.) - a perennial plant, which in Europe had been planted on roofs from time immemorial. Known still ancient and early medieval authors, it was considered a guard against thunder and fires. According to popular beliefs, known in England, France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia and other countries, lightning will never strike a house on the roof of the growing young. Faith in the miraculous power of the young was preserved in the late XIX - early XX century. It was reflected in its names among different peoples, which emphasized the connection of the plant with Thunderbolts, its vitality, its role as a ward of shelter and roofing.
