Abstract

Donald Keene is an American but known as a famous Japanese literature specialist. Keene has been living as a specialist on the Japanese literature in Japan for a long time and his connections with Junichiro Tanizaki, Yasunari Kawabata, Yukio Mishima and others are also notable. He has been treated the Japanese literature as a subject to study, but he (Donald Keene) himself has not been treated as an object of study by others. I think that he is an extremely important person for the mutual understanding between Japan and America in the history during and after the Pacific War. In fact, he is not only research the Japanese literature but also other fields like music. He has the considerable knowledge and insight into the opera. In this paper, I try to examine Mr. Keene's critique of music and follow its direction to discuss his value after the war period in Japan. Once he writes the music, the experiences of the Pacific War are always been mentioned. Therefore, to read this part of article should allow us to grasp the Japanese history by reverse approach.
