Abstract

Beginning with Paul Kivel’s Act Like a Man Box, Greene draws on a wide range of sources and research to highlight the connections between the early enforcement of retrogressive performances of masculinity in boys and our nation’s epidemic levels of male and white supremacist violence, often directed at girls and women. Central to Greene’s thesis is the use, in domination-based masculine culture, of the denigration of the feminine to police and bully boys into a narrow performance of traditional masculinity.
